Rose And Crown Pub

So for my first blog I was thinking what can I start with? And then it came to me! As I am from the United Kingdom and my favourite park is Epcot, why not start at the United Kingdom pavilion at Epcot. Specifically The Rose And Crown Pub! 

Now this wonderful pub has many details and bits of history that I will share with you.

First lets start off with the style of the pub. Disney has based their pub on four different styles of British pubs. They are:

  The city or "street" pub dating back from the 1890's Victorian city center features brick and wood paneling on the facade and gives the mahogany bar, the etched glass and molded plaster ceiling.
• 
  
  Dickenson pub, after the Cheshire Cheese pub in London offers a brick walled flagstone terrace with covered tables, slate roof and half timbered Elizabethan styled exterior.
• 
  
  Waterfront or "River" pub, on the canal lock- a facade with a modest stone building, clay tiled roof and decorative doorways, stone terrace with an iron fence lining the homey village inn-styled dining room.
• 
  
  Country, from the suburbs of the 17th and 18th centuries- a slate roof and plaster exterior with stone quoined corners.

 Now lets look at the sign and meaning of the Rose and Crown pub.

 

In the UK the Rose and Crown is the 12th most popular pub name with 408 known pubs. The official meaning of the Rose and Crown is as follows.

King Edward III used a golden rose as a personal badge, and two of his sons adapted it by changing the colour: John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster, used a red rose, and Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York, used a white rose. The dynastic conflicts between their descendants are collectively called the Wars of the Roses. In 1485 Henry Tudor, a descendant of Lancaster, defeated Richard III of the York dynasty and married Richard's niece Elizabeth of York. Since then the combined red-and-white Tudor rose, often crowned, has been a symbol of the monarchy of England and demonstrates loyalty to the monarchy.

Disney have obviously done their research on the design of the sign, here is a picture of a Rose and Crown pub here in the UK. You can see that the designs are very similar.

Onto the inside.

                                 

The inside is very similar to a pub you would find in the UK, old fashioned carpet, dark furniture, tankards and trinkets everywhere. They even have a dartboard on display. Also in the pub you will see this displayed

This is the Rose and Crowns Latin motto it says ‘Otium Cum Dignitate’ and means "Leisure With Dignity". Another great little detail that not many guests would get.

As most of you already know the Rose and Crown is a great place to watch Illuminations but here is another great treasure that is not available on any times guide.

                                   

This is Carl, the experienced barman of the Rose and Crown and if you talk to him and ask him nicely he will show you something that will astound and amaze you. He will balance an empty glass or two on top of a DIME! And sometimes if your lucky he will balance a pint of Guinness on one! Don't believe me?? Here's a picture.
